Birdwatching Experience

My Experience
By Anurup Shrestha, Grade VIII

When I finished my final examination of class four, I had a long break. I was bored of sitting at home. I wanted to visit many place and know about the places where I had never been. My uncle, Deepak Shrestha and his friends go to day hike and bird watching every Saturday. One day my uncle asked me for birdwatching. He took me to Tau Dah. On that day I was bored of watching the ducks at the lake. All the birds looked same to me. Next week I went to Shivapuri National Park. On that day we went to the monastery and took some rest. On the way I saw many birds, insects, barking deer and beautiful butterflies. The trail was very long, it took us whole day but at last we reached at the top. From there we saw mountains and good view of Kathmandu valley. It was my first experienced of climbing hills and know about terrain of our country.

After that trip I wanted to go to bird watching trip with them. They are also members of BCN. They all encouraged me be bird watcher and taught some technique and basic knowledge about birds and its habitat.

The first bird I recognised was WHITE-THROATED KINGFISHER at Taudah. I saw many birds like wetland birds, jungle birds, field birds etc. Now I have identified many birds like ducks, warblers, chats, egrets, heron, eagle, kite, thrush, woodpecker, sandpiper, lapwings etc.

I have been to Phulchauki, Shivapuri NP, Godawari, Pharping, Taudah, Bosan, Sundarijal, Suryabinayak, Bajrabarahi, Chovar, Nagarjun, Myhpi, Bhimdhunga, Tokha, Bagmati and Manhara river etc. The best place for birdwatching is Phulchauki'

My best birds are Scarlet Minivets, Verditer Flycatcher and Asian Paradise Flycatcher. Scarlet Minivet is very common. They are seen in the forest. Verditer Flycatcher are also very common seen in the forest. It has very distinct colour. Paradise Flycatcher is the most beautiful bird that I have ever seen. It is not common in Kathmandu valley. It has a very white long tail then the body and its head is black in colour.

I have seen very less students know birds. I want to encourage my friends to know about birds. We should protect bird's habitat. Its better to go birdwatching than to go to zoo to see birds. There are very less species of birds at the zoo.

Birds in the Garden!
By Akhima Thapa, Grade VII

Back of my house there's a big garden. It has green trees, green grasses, corns and even flowers. Many different kinds of birds come there like House Crow, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Red-Vented Bulbul, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Common and Jungle Myna, Cattle Egret, Rock Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Black Drongo, Black Kite, White-throated Kingfisher, Oriental Magpie Robin, Oriental White-eye, Pond Heron, Eurasian Cuckoo, etc.
Sometimes we see Coppersmith Barbert, most of all calls. But nowadays I don't hear its call too. I only see White-throated Kingfisher sometimes. Rock Pigeon are domestic. I started my Garden survey from January 1st 2006. From then I have seen many birds and my favourite bird is Red-Vented Bulbul and Rose-ringed Parakeet. I love watching birds. They migrate from one place to another place. There's a crow's nest in the big tree in back of my house, in the garden. I survey the birds every evening time and sometimes in the morning. If we see birds very carefully we can find many beautiful species of birds in our garden.

My Experience observing the Birds
By Chandni Malla, Grade VII

Bird watching was a great experience. it was fun and knowledgeable at the same time. Bird watching helped in many ways like we got to know more about the bird and their names, which climate they live in , what do they need , what do they eat, drink etc. One thing I noticed was birds like peaceful and fresh climate. They get scared and distracted by noise specially the cement factory, paper mill and distillery discharge effluents to the river causing water pollution , When I went to watch birds I saw many of them they were bright and colorful they made pleasant voices which made us. We didn't even talk to each other because we were so much more interested on the birds. By the time we had to leave I wanted to stay and learn more about the birds.

My Experience of Birds
By Sweta Shrestha, Grade VIII

Watching the birds on the trees, and keeping an eye on their behavior was a job I had to succeed with patience. It was quite fascinating to watch the different species of birds. The different reaction to the noises that appear. One of the advices I 've gotten about bird watching was not to make loud noises. It was hard to not make noise, especially with your whole class. There were so many people trying to look at one bird. The weather was a clear sky and the sun was shining bright with the hot climate it was hard for us to concentrate on the birds. But with a soft breeze of cool wind and the beautiful site of all kinds of birds with different unique color feathers it was worth going through all the little difficulties we had.
