Birdwatching around Annapurna Area, (March 26 - 13 April, 2007) -Vimal Thapa

Lammergeier

During this trip around Annapurna massive, which is one of the classic adventure treks in Nepal, I was lucky to be able to see, hear and record the numerous birds, though only about one third of the existing birds in the whole area were recorded. It was also great to have friend, also member of our forum (Friendsofbird)- Mr. Phurkel Sherpa who happen to be on the same trip till the halfway. We had a great birding time in couple of places like Besi Sahar in the beginning and at Manang towards the middle of the trip.

Chestnut-headed Bee Eater
Besi Sahar located at about 800m of elevation is the starting point of the trek naturally placed by the western bank of might river Marsyangdi. The birding was just done for about an hour, along the farms and around the town but we were blessed with almost forty species including Chestnut-headed Bee-eater and Indian Robin etc. Other hand Manang at an elevation of 3500m, lying behind the Annapurna massive is very barren area with very little vegetation of alpine type, but the has beautiful lakes and astounding mountain views. The lake called Gangapurna Glacier Lake at Manang falls on the migratory route of many waterfowls. Therefore we happen to see Ruddy Shelduck, Tufted Duck and Northern Pintail still enjoying their enroute time peacefully. The other areas include areas of Pokhara by the lake, lower Mustang, Ghorepani and Ghandruk mainly. The most recommended areas for birding are Beshi Sahar to Chame, Pisang and Humde of the Marsyangdi valley and Tukche, Kalopani, Ghasa, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Bhaisikharka Ghanduk and Dampus area in this side of the pass.

The highlight of the trek was obviously the Golden Eagle seen three times in three different areas like Timang, Pisang and Manang. The first sighting include – White-throated Redstart at Pisang, which does not seems to be included in Carol Inskipp's record. The total of 140 species of the birds were recorded on the whole trip that includes -
